On the subject of time share resorts it should be noted that there is a growing sector of  RV and tent/cabin resort offerings. Many of these resorts offer the same amenities as time share resorts and their memberships operate in a very similar manor. The better known of these works like a club in the same fashion as Disney Resorts or RCI timeshares.

These can in some cases be as expensive as time share villas. There are those, for reasons of their own, who prefer camping vacations and these camping memberships may be for them. Some simply prefer to own their own bedding and take their favorite chair with them–that and a host of other personal items. For them the appeal of a $150,000 RV bus is self-evident. For others it simply isn’t their cup of tea.

Well the fact is that there’s a lot to be said for both schools of thought. Although the RV camping membership clubs may be very expensive there are ways to save money on that sort of recreation. In many states it is legal to sleep in the interstate rest stop overflow parking lots. The occasional free parking spots (like a relative’s backyard etc.) cut the cost of extended traveling. Also at least for closer destinations the journey is part of the appeal. Slow leisurely drives to and from an RV destination beat a hectic flight schedule.

It should be noted that a lot of RV owners are old enough to get deep discounts for seniors. Many state parks offer half price to the older generation so that the higher priced stays are balanced with the lower priced and free stays.  Additionally this group tends to travel more than younger people so that the RV is less expensive in the long run than time share resorts.

The real draw to the  camping membership is that there tend to be less crowded resorts in more remote locations available to the RV/tent/cabin enthusiast. Many people really do want to get away from crowds and noise and traffic when they recreate. This more rustic approach fills that tall order. For some there’s just more appeal from a camp fire and pine trees than from drinks with little umbrellas in them. But in all fairness some of the camping resorts offer a little of both.
